Bathroom remodels have become more and more popular over the years, evolving from simply utilitarian to more luxurious and creative designs. While new construction tends to be expensive, remodels are affordable while still helping increase the value of a home. Perhaps that’s why, for the second year in a row, bathroom remodel is at the top of a list of home remodeling projects, according to Angie’s List.
Building off trends that emerged last year, 2016 is shaping up to be an interesting time for interior design. By and large, tranquility and natural appeal have dominated bathroom remodeling projects, but there’s still plenty of room to get creative while building a contemporary look that’s also fully functional.
Bathroom Remodeling: 9 Trends to Watch for in 2016
Homeowners like to have their bathrooms be a place where they can relax and rejuvenate, and this is why spa-like designs are gaining attention and popularity. With that in mind, here are nine hot bathroom remodeling trends for the year ahead:
Wood & Other Earthy Materials
Wood is leading the charge as far as the “natural look” trend goes, appearing on walls, floors, and even sinks. Duckboard flooring looks poised to be particularly popular in 2016, as it adds the kind of warmth that’s become so popular. In addition to wood, natural materials like river rock and quarried stone are being used to help create a soothing, earthy vibe. Use them in sinks, bathtubs, vanity tops, floors, and walls.
Cool Tones
Cool colors have always been popular in bathrooms, and 2016 is marking a return to classic approaches to interior design. Green and blue are particularly popular, especially when used to supplement white. Browns and tans are also coming back.
Freestanding Bathtubs
Long gone are the days of Jacuzzi tubs. Likewise, built-in bathtubs are declining in popularity as well. These days, if you’re committing to a major remodeling project and you’ve got the space, a freestanding bathtub is one of the year’s hottest additions. You’ll enjoy long, soothing soaks year after year. The variety and designs for freestanding soaking tubs are expanding allowing you to truly create a spa setting within your home.
Technology
Technology is entering our bathrooms allowing us to add fun besides functionality to your morning routine. From wireless music streaming systems and self-cleaning toilets to programmable touchless faucets and showerheads, bathrooms are becoming more technologically advanced. There are water-saving “smart” showers that are bluetooth enabled and connect to the Internet. There is a digital showering system that allows you to control your shower with the touch of a button, including water temperature, water pressure, steam, and lights. At this point, the technological revolution has only entered our bathrooms – the possibilities are truly endless.
Shower Seats
One of the more innovative developments in bathroom remodeling, shower seats are winning rave reviews for their practicality. Many people shower just before bed or just after rising – times when they’re likely to be sleepy. This makes shower seats a welcome addition in many households, especially if you have seniors in your home.
Patterned Tiles
Tile is in and with the various colors/shapes/patterns available on the market these days you can easily incorporate creativity and personal style in your bathroom design. Interior designers looking to make a splash this year are opting for creative tile patterns, including herringbone, basketweave, and windmill patterns. Geometric and symmetrical designs seem to be falling out of favor.
Water-Efficient Fixtures
Conserving water is good for the environment, and it’s also beneficial for your bottom line. Water-efficient fixtures can shave a bundle off your water bills, all while making your home more attractive on the resale market. Things like low-flow toilets, water-efficient showerheads, and water-saving bathroom faucets are not only popular – they’re becoming a necessity among environmentally conscious homeowners.
Dual-Head Showers
Contemporary showers are moving away from the single-stream overhead design and moving towards a dual setup, with one overhead fixture and one waist-level fixture. Add pulsing and water streaming options and you’ve got a built-in full-body shower massage!
Open Shelving
Open shelving is chic and trendy – and a good motivator to declutter. Designers have been making more frequent use of open shelving strategies in bathrooms so far this year. Best of all, this approach can be used to create additional storage space in areas that would otherwise go unused. Bottom line: homeowners want a clutter-free bathroom and plenty of accessible storage. Whenever possible, take advantage of vertical space and take your storage solutions up the wall.
